An interest in law enforcement leads to a career at Customs

Meet Kimberly! She joined Customs as a Variable Hours Officer (VHO) earlier this year after 11 years as a Montessori preschool teacher.

Kimberly’s interest in working for a law enforcement agency led her to watch Border Patrol and ultimately apply for the Customs officer role.“I started in February 2022 and am currently working at Wellington Airport. I really enjoyed my training for the initial six weeks, learning about the different legislations and what Customs does. I’m really looking forward to learning more about all the roles and responsibilities at the airport with on-the-job training.

At the moment, I am mainly working at the eGates, and the Immigration booth at the departure and arrival halls. I particularly enjoy working in departures because I have the opportunity to leave a positive impression on travellers leaving New Zealand!

The friendly and positive culture is what Kimberly loves about working at Customs.

“I really enjoy seeing and working with my airport team. Everybody looks after one another.
