Customs patrol vessel to visit Waitangi for community open days

01.37pm 03 September 2019 | News

The Customs patrol vessel, Hawk V, will visit Waitangi this weekend for two community open days.

Members of the public will be able to tour the boat and learn more about the Customs maritime team.

Chief Customs Officer Danielle Loza says that showcasing the world-class Hawk V patrol vessel is part of a recruitment programme in Northland, for Customs’ new Opua-based maritime team.

“We’re issuing an open invite to the community to come aboard the Hawk and learn more about the work that Customs does to protect New Zealand across borders.”

“From mid-September, we will be advertising for people to join our new Opua-Based maritime team, which will support the existing Auckland-based team.”

“The new Opua-based maritime roles will see the new recruits out on the water and amongst Te Tai Tokerau communities – where they’ll be ambassadors for Customs and border security.

“We’re looking for people who are passionate about protecting Northland, and understand the region and its maritime environment.”

The Hawk V and Customs staff will be based at the Waitangi Berth and Yacht Club from 9am to 3pm on 7 September and 8 September 2019.
