A delegation from the Customs Administration of the Netherlands has been welcomed to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland this week, further strengthening bilateral customs relations.
The New Zealand Customs Service is hosting a three-day visit by a group of Dutch senior officials led by Director General Nanette van Schelven.
New Zealand’s engagement with countries like the Netherlands helps to enhance trade opportunities and strengthens our respective border systems. The joint Customs relationship further support the Free Trade Agreement that was signed earlier in the year.
Representatives from both agencies have today signed a joint work programme to enhance cooperation, following the signing of a Customs Mutual Administrative Assistance Agreement with the Kingdom of the Netherlands in March 2022, which enters into force on 1 October 2023.
Joe Cannon, Director International, New Zealand Customs Service, says the Netherlands is a key partner for New Zealand, and an attractive gateway to European markets for kiwi exporters.
“As the Netherlands is a major logistical hub, our Dutch colleagues have a good understanding of efficient trade as well as how criminals seek to exploit international supply chains. They are also world leaders in innovative technology at the border, with a similar approach to border security.
This visit is an opportunity to deepen our engagement with an important partner and share insights and advances across a range of issues that will benefit both parties,” Mr Canon said.
The Dutch delegation will be working with New Zealand Customs on a wide range of topics during the visit, including transnational organised crime, maritime security and operational facilities.
